Creative Skills - Sensory Regulators from the Art Cupboard

Using Everyday Art Materials to Support Nervous System Regulation Sensory Regulators from the Art Cupboard is a hands-on, experiential training that explores how simple, everyday art materials can become powerful tools for regulation, grounding, and therapeutic support. From the softness of charcoal to the boldness of paint and the fluid movement of watercolours, this session invites you to experience how colour, texture, pressure, and movement can gently support the nervous system back toward balance. You don’t need to be an artist. You don’t need specialist equipment. You do need curiosity, attunement, and a willingness to slow things down. This on-demand recording is ideal for counsellors, coaches, therapists, and helping professionals who want practical, sensory-based tools they can use with clients who struggle to regulate through words alone. What This Session Explores This training focuses on sensory regulation through art-making, rather than art as performance or outcome. You’ll explore: How different art materials interact with the nervous system The regulating qualities of texture, resistance, softness, fluidity, and colour Why sensory experiences can be especially supportive for: Neurodivergent clients Clients with sensory processing challenges Clients in high anxiety, shutdown, or overwhelm How to introduce materials slowly, safely, and with choice Ways to support grounding and re-balancing without pushing clients into activation This is a felt learning experience, you’ll be invited to try things alongside the recording, noticing your own responses as you go.
