Understanding and Treating Depression: A CBT Approach

Depression is a common mental health condition that affects how people feel, think, and function day to day. It goes beyond feeling sad or low—it can impact sleep, appetite, concentration, motivation, and relationships. People experiencing depression may feel hopeless, fatigued, or disconnected from things they once enjoyed. It’s important to recognise that depression varies in severity and presentation, and understanding its signs is the first step toward offering effective support. Psychological therapies remain a cornerstone in the effective treatment of Depression, with cognitive and behavioural approaches consistently supported by evidence. This one-hour talk offers a practical and insightful overview of how Depression presents, how we can recognise its signs and symptoms, and how CBT interventions can be used to support clients in meaningful ways. Drawing on NICE treatment guidance and relevant theory, we’ll explore what maintains Depression, how to build a shared understanding with clients, and which cognitive and behavioural strategies can be most helpful.
