Helping Children and Young People Manage Anxiety: CBT in Practice

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a common and often misunderstood condition in children and young people. Unlike everyday worries, persistent anxiety can disrupt sleep, concentration, appetite, confidence, and relationships, leaving young people feeling tense, restless, or overwhelmed. These worries may spill into school, friendships, and family life, highlighting the importance of recognising the varied ways GAD can present and impact wellbeing. This session offers a clear and practical overview of how GAD manifests in children and adolescents, and how evidence-based CBT interventions can provide meaningful support. We will explore the factors that maintain anxiety, strategies for building a shared understanding with young clients and families, and effective cognitive and behavioural techniques to reduce worry and strengthen resilience. Drawing on NICE guidance, theory, and clinical experience across both face-to-face and online settings, the talk combines insight with practical tools. The session concludes with a Q&A, offering space to reflect and deepen learning together.
